Acquisition of the neodymium isotopic composition of the North Atlantic Deep Water ArchiMer
Lacan, F; Jeandel, C.
The North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) neodymium isotopic composition (Nd IC) is increasingly used in oceanography and paleoceanography to trace large-scale circulation and weathering processes, notably to investigate past variations of the global thermohaline circulation. Although the present-day NADW Nd IC is well characterized at epsilon(Nd) = - 13.5, the acquisition of this isotopic signature ( in other words, the causes of this value) has so far been very sparsely documented. Such an understanding is, however, fundamental to the interpretation of paleo records. Nd IC and rare earth element concentrations were measured at 9 stations within the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre ( SIGNATURE cruise, summer 1999). The comparison of this data set with our...

Assessments of anthropogenic CO2 distribution in the tropical Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Touratier, Franck; Goyet, C; Coatanoan, Christine; Andrie, C.
With a limited number of properties (salinity, temperature, total dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, and oxygen) from a recent cruise in the tropical Atlantic Ocean, We use the simple and recent approach TrOCA (Tracer combining Oxygen, inorganic Carbon, and total Alkalinity) to estimate the distribution of anthropogenic CO2 along three latitudinal sections. In order to assess the quality of the anthropogenic CO2 distribution, results from the method are compared to the CFC-11 measurements. We discuss the large-scale distribution of the main water masses of the tropical Atlantic Ocean in the light of the anthropogenic CO2 and the CFC-11 distributions. Keeping in mind that the anthropogenic CO2 emission began similar to 60 years earlier than that...

Coherent heat patterns revealed by unsupervised classification of Argo temperature profiles in the North Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Maze, Guillaume; Mercier, Herle; Fablet, Ronan; Tandeo, Pierre; Radcenco, Manuel Lopez; Lenca, Philippe; Feucher, Charlene; Le Goff, Clement.
A quantitative understanding of the integrated ocean heat content depends on our ability to determine how heat is distributed in the ocean and what are the associated coherent patterns. This study demonstrates how this can be achieved using unsupervised classification of Argo temperature profiles. The classification method used is a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) that decomposes the Probability Density Function of a dataset into a weighted sum of Gaussian modes. It is determined that the North Atlantic Argo dataset of temperature profiles con- tains 8 groups of vertically coherent heat patterns, or classes. Each of the temperature profile classes reveals unique and physically coherent heat distributions along the vertical axis. A key result of this study is...

Lenses of extremely cold water in the central Ionian Sea ArchiMer
Sellschopp, J; Onken, R.
Two lenses of cold water with core temperature 12.5 degrees C were observed in the central Ionian Sea between the thermocline and the salinity maximum due to Levantine Intermediate Water. The estimated salinity in the lenses is 37.8. The relevance of the observation is assured by the high number of expendable probes deployed. The lens diameters are estimated at 30 km. Analogy with a less spectacular feature contained in oceanographic measurements in the following year implies that the lenses rotate clockwise. The cold water lenses originate from the Adriatic Sea with a generation mechanism equivalent to meddy formation at the Iberian peninsula (eddy of Mediterranean water in the Atlantic Ocean). Year to year differences in cold lens generation are expected...

Meroplankton community structure across oceanographic fronts along the South Brazil Shelf ArchiMer
Costa Brandao, Manoela; Garcia, Carlos A.e; Freire, Andrea S..
The influence of oceanographic fronts on the abundance and community composition of invertebrate larvae, mostly of benthic species, along nearly 2000 km of the southwestern Atlantic shelf (21–34°S) was investigated. Meroplankton was sampled through vertical hauls at 89 stations, distributed along 14 cross-shelf transects, during late spring 2010 and early summer 2011. Salinity and temperature were registered with a CTD/rosette system, which provided seawater for chlorophyll-a and nutrient concentrations estimations. Vertical profiles of temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a and nutrients were used as proxies of the fronts. In addition, high-resolution thermosalinograph data were used to detect surface frontal features. Meroplankton abundance peaks were...

Near-surface structures in the Cape Ghir filament off Morocco ArchiMer
Hagen, E; Zulicke, C; Feistel, R.
A meso-scale CTD survey was conducted off Cape Ghir (31 degrees N) from 29 September to 3 October 1992, with the inspection of mass-field structures in the 300 dbar layer as its main objective, and relatively large tongue of cold surface water as the subject of investigation. This filament of upwelled water extends about 200 km seaward from the coastal zone of Morocco. Our CTD survey included two zonal transects 213 km in length, sampled synchronously by R/Vs Hudson along 31 degrees 30' N and A. v.Humboldt along 30 degrees 30' N. A meridional section followed the shelf edge at 10 degrees 10' W, and five zigzag sections were carried out above the Cape Ghir Plateau (CGP). Data resulting from an extended transect, sampled ten days earlier between 9 degrees...

The holoplankton of the Santa Catarina coast, southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Resgalla Jr,Charrid.
This paper presents information from different sampling surveys carried out along the Santa Catarina coast in order to outline the biogeographical characteristics of the zooplankton in this region and identify species or groups of species with potential use as bioindicators. Based on a checklist of species of the zooplankton community in the state, it was observed that, in the warmer months of the year, the fauna is similar to that of the states of Paraná and São Paulo (e.g. Creseis virgula f. virgula, Penilia avirostris; Acartia lilljeborgi and Oithona oswaldocruzi), while in the colder months there are coastal representatives of the fauna of Rio Grande do Sul (e.g. Acartia tonsa). However, the zooplankton consists predominantly of warm water species for...

The intermediate Mediterranean water inflow along the northern slope of the Iberian Peninsula ArchiMer
Diaz Del Rio, G; Gonzalez, N; Marcote, D.
During the SEFOS 95 cruise (25 March to 15 April 1995) (figure I) a number of CTD casts were made in order to study the intermediate Mediterranean water (IMW) off the west and north coasts of the Iberian Peninsula. One long-term mooring, for current measurement at four levels, was deployed at 43 degrees 57' N - 5 degrees 51' Vii from February to May. We establish a picture of the distribution and transformation of the IMW along the coast of the Iberian Peninsula based on the thermohaline characteristics of the water masses and the determination of the percentage content of the IMW by the use of the triangle of vertical mixing of the North Atlantic central water (NACW), IMW and Labrador water (LW) [3]. A generalised temperature/salinity (T/S) curve is...
